Hello! My name is Janell Baum, and I am a graduate of the Agricultural Communications program at the University of Illinois. On this site, I am excited to share selected samples of my communications work.

My portfolio is a collection of projects I have completed through class, work experience, or for family businesses. Each section--writing, design, photography, and web—gives you a closer look at my work. I take my inspiration from my surroundings on campus and on the farm.

The writing section includes several samples from class, my work at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE), and the American Royal Livestock Show.  In addition to press releases, I have also written public relations plans, web content, and I write informally on my personal blog.

My design work has been largely created using the Adobe Creative Suite, with emphasis on Photoshop and InDesign. This section incorporates work for my family farm and my mother’s antique store. I have worked with many individuals to proof and edit my work, however I am often given free reign to include my own design interpretations of color and layout.

Photography is an enjoyable pastime, especially when returning home to my farm. My selections for the site include black and white photos taken with a Pentax K-1000 35mm film camera for an agriculture communications class. For these photos, I was responsible for hand developing and printing each one, and became proficient in dodging and burning techniques. Color photographs were taken with my Canon Rebel DSLR camera.

Web projects include managing the farm Facebook page and collaborating with a web designer to create pages for Baum’s Hilltop Farm and CR Antiques. I have written most content and have been instrumental in design, layout and color choices for each. Also as part of two work experiences, I have managed Facebook accounts for Baum Chevrolet-Buick and NAILE.
